Belthangady: The incident took place on Friday night at Kapu in Chibidre village near Mundaje where the auto-rickshaw fell into the river after the driver lost control.
The deceased woman has been identified as Safia (57), a resident of Kakkinje Kattarigudde, Chibidre.
The rickshaw driven by Abubakar Siddique lost control and fell into the Mrityunjaya river along the Mangaluru-Villupuram national highway while participating in a program. The woman fell into the river and died.
The rickshaw driver along with other passengers Mariamma (25) and Muhammad Ashraf (35) was injured and escaped unhurt. A case has been registered at Belthangadi traffic station.
Dangerous place
This stretch of highway is about 200m. The road is wide and narrow and has a heavy rise and a deep river valley on one side. Now the board has been brought down to the Kindi dam below and a huge amount of water has accumulated in the river.
Four months ago, when a rickshaw fell into the river valley at this place, it hit another tree and the passengers avoided falling into the river.
