Belthangadi: A student committed suicide on January 30 due to a threat received through an Instagram account. Harshit (19), a resident of Ashok Nagar in Dharamsthala, who was studying in the 2nd year of graduation in a college in Belthangadi, was contacted by an unknown person on his Instagram account for chatting about 15 days ago. Do it, make a video call on your mobile phone and talk, I have your personal video, I will make it viral in public, he demanded Rs 11,000 if the video is not viral. Afraid of his threat, the young man asked for time till January 23rd to give the money. But Harshit was unable to settle the money till the afternoon of January 24th, so he consumed rat stone in the afternoon.
Later, he fell ill and was taken to a private hospital in Ujira for treatment. The doctor there examined him and advised him to take him to a hospital in Mangalore for further treatment. But the young man died there without responding to treatment. A case has been registered at Dharmasthala police station.
