Belthangadi: The BJP government in Karnataka in 2012 had framed the Karnataka Act No. 24/2012 on granting full rights to coastal landholders in Dr. VS Achar’s Vishesha Muthurji. Moolidars had filed Writ Petition No. 11158/2013 and other petitions in the High Court challenging the validity of the Act granting absolute ownership to Karnataka moolagenis or inalmoolagendars.
Challenging the authority of the state government to enact this Act, the Moolidars asserted that it was against their fundamental rights. The High Court dismissed these writ petitions and ruled that the government has the power to make an Act in this regard.
This has paved the way for the empowerment of thousands of coastal tenants who have been waiting for their full rights for decades. Member of Legislative Council K. Pratapasinha has demanded that the government should immediately take action in the next first session itself to give justice to the original share holders who are waiting like a horoscope bird for compensation and should not follow the policy of delay for any reason and implement it immediately.
